Refunds, attendance, grading, credit and how to raise a complaint. This is the same wording that appears in our course catalog, which every enrolling student receives.

Refund policy

The LEARN Center will refund the unused portion of prepaid tuition and fees on a pro rata basis. The proration is determined on the ratio of the number of days of instruction completed by the student to the total number of instructional days in the course.

  • A student who cancels within 7 days of signing the enrollment agreement, but before instruction begins, receives all monies returned with the exception of the non-refundable registration fee.
  • Thereafter, a student will be liable for the non-refundable registration fee, plus the cost of any textbooks or supplies accepted, plus tuition liability as of the student's last date of physical attendance.
  • Tuition liability is determined by the percentage of the program offered to the student.
  • The student refund may be more than stated here if the accrediting agency refund policy results in a greater refund.

Separate liability schedules apply to quarter programs of 7 to 14 weeks and term programs of 15 to 17 weeks. Ask the office for the full schedule. The failure of a student to immediately notify the school director in writing of the student's intent to withdraw may delay a refund of tuition pursuant to Section 5002(3) of the Education Law.

Attendance

The student is expected to attend all classes as per the identified schedule.

  • A cut class is a missed scheduled class day without 24 hours notice. A student who accumulates three cut classes will be dropped from the program.
  • A postponed class is a missed scheduled class day with 24 hours notice. A student who accumulates five postponed classes will be dropped from the program.
  • A lateness is an unexcused missed class start of more than 15 minutes. Circumstances beyond the student's control, such as Long Island Rail Road scheduling or unscheduled traffic police action, may be grounds for a waived lateness. Five latenesses will result in being dropped from the program.
  • A leave of absence is an unforeseen major event where the student needs consecutive days off. The student must complete school form LARF to qualify for an excused absence.
  • Makeup classes are subject to the School Director's discretion and to class availability. Leave of absence rescheduling takes precedence over postponed class rescheduling, which takes precedence over cut class rescheduling.

Makeup classes and school closings

  • If a student misses class without notifying the school, they are allotted one free makeup day for every 10 days enrolled. A 12 day course has 1 free makeup day, a 43 day course has 4. This does not include notified absences or school closings.
  • The same applies to late arrivals and early dismissals that are the student's fault.
  • Makeup hours beyond that allowance cost $150.00 per hour and are the responsibility of the enrollee.
  • If the school cancels a class, all students are notified in a timely manner and given a makeup class. The Director will offer three dates that fit the student's program.

Grading and progress

Students are graded on the skills learned against the materials presented, in concert with attendance, safety, communication and the ability to follow direction.

  • Communication 10%, following direction 10%, attendance 20%, safety 30%, practical yard instruction 30%.
  • 80% is the minimum grade to show satisfactory academic progress, assessed at 25, 50, 75 and 100 percent curriculum completion.
  • A student whose cumulative average falls below the threshold is placed on academic probation for the next assessment interval. If the average does not rise above the threshold, the student will be terminated from the program.
  • Students who maintain the progress requirements and the School Rules and Regulations graduate and receive a certificate of completion as well as a laminated wallet card showing proof of curriculum completion.
  • The LEARN Center maintains records of grades and transcripts of students for a minimum of three years.

Course credit and college credit

Licensed private career schools offer curricula measured in clock hours, not credit hours. Certificates of completion are issued to students who meet clock hour requirements.

  • The granting of any college credit is solely at the discretion of the institution of higher education the student may subsequently attend.
  • The LEARN Center will grant credit for hours of instruction from any individual class or curriculum completed in its entirety, where there is class equivalency.
  • All Basic-Level training course hours are fully transferable to the Entry-Level Curriculum. All credits are subject to the approval of a School Director.
